Expect a magical mystical show, tales of old Mexico, poetry, experimental dance, brass, projections and great fun at the West End Cultural Centre when Winnipeg’s The Mariachi Ghost release their debut full-length album on November 2.

Known for their experimental style, The Mariachi Ghost Dancers who join the band on the stage bring an element of theatricality, creating a unique experience rather than just a piece of music.

The Mariachi Ghost’s debut self-titled full length album (produced by the Juno award winning Benoit Morier & engineered expert metalhead Craig Boychuk) has a common theme linking the songs within. The album progressively narrates the story of “The Mariachi Ghost” a justice seeking, machete wielding rider who seeks vengeance and punishment of those who oppress and are unjust. Each song is a chapter in his story. The band’s unique sound is crafted by dissecting traditional Mexican music and rebuilding it as prog rock. Each instrument strives to mime characteristics of the fabled Mariachi Ghost.

A unified decision was made shortly before 2013 to really give the band a “go”, making it more of a serious and full time commitment for each band member. “We had our first AGM, opened up a company, did an indie go-go campaign, played more shows than ever and recorded this album. This (band) has been our relaxing hobby for 5 years, now that we got serious there is a learning curve that goes with it, still ever growing” says front-man Jorge Requena.

Response has been good to band. They’ve recently been approached by promoters in Australia, London, Barcelona, Paris and México. If all goes according to plan, expect the band to keep growing on a worldwide stage.
