The Oxford Girl & Other Stories marks Oysterband’s (gulp!) 30th anniversary – it’s a stripped-down re-recordings of some of their favourite songs from the whole of that period. It’s a nod to a career that has spawned countless parties, critical acclaim, and their ascension to international folk all-stars. Oysterband make a modern, folk-based British music, acoustic at heart, sometimes intense, sometimes rocking. Since 1978 they've toured in 35 countries, festivals, concerts, bars, rallies, even jails and made 12 studio albums. They originally collided in and around Canterbury, a gang of like-minded mates and musicians who could jam and practice for free in a squat near the university. Influenced by all manner of music, culture and style, they listened to anything and everything - but the heartbeat of the band was a deep-rooted love of the traditional music of Britain. |
In recent years, the band has consciously tried to evolve their songwriting beyond the clichès of the "Celtic" style, and with Rise Above (2002) and especially Meet You There (2007) they are certainly taking a step in that direction. Meet You There has been hailed widely as their best recording to date. Oysterband’s newest album is NOT a best of nor a systematic retrospective. It's a set of all-new acoustic recordings to mark Oysterband's 30th anniversary: 14 classic songs from all periods of the band's history, re-imagined and re-arranged for now. “Even after so long a career, we can't help feeling the most exciting and fruitful time might be right now.” - Oysterband |
