Inuit throat singer and artist Tanya Tagaq celebrates the release of her newest album ‘Retribution’ at the West End Cultural Centre on Saturday, March 18th, 2017.
Tanya Tagaq follows up her 2014 Polaris Prize winning album ‘Animism’ with ‘Retribution’, an even more musically and politically aggressive, powerful, spine tingling masterpiece.
This album is about rape: rape of women, rape of the land, rape of children, despoiling of traditional lands without consent. The last track of the album is a cover of Nirvana’s ‘Rape Me’ and is at least a hundred times more chilling than the original.
‘Retribution’ is Tagaq’s portrait of a violent world in crisis, a cohesive, whole statement, a complex, exhilarating, howling protest that links lack of respect for women’s rights to lack of respect for the planet to a lack of respect for Indigenous rights.
Attempt to listen to this album without weeping, without shuddering, without feeling it’s intense power and immediacy.
Pitchfork - "By more readily embracing rock and rap forms, Retribution stands to lure a wider audience into Tagaq’s unsettled sound world—but only to ensnare it like prey as she goes in for the kill.”
Rolling Stone - "A dissonant, distortion-saturated art-metal blizzard.”
CBC Music - “It’s maybe through Tagaq’s giving nature that she’s so effectively able to address what’s been taken.”
NPR Music - "The songs on Retribution encompass terror, rage, ecstasy, adoration and bone-leeching sadness, and they do so with a seemingly uninterrupted line of communication to their source.”
