Dow and Barber

Melodies on Mercredi, the West End’s new music series will premiere in February 2010 featuring original music from Winnipeg’s foremost young singer-songwriters.

On the first Wednesday of each month Winnipegers will be invited to listen to live music in our new Assiniboine Community Hall acoustic space. On these special nights we will also celebrate the opening of a monthly art exhibit by local professional and youth artists. It is the perfect opportunity to experience home grown talent in an intimate setting for a low price of $5 per ticket. Pudding will be available for purchase.

Featuring Art by the Students of Daniel MacIntyre
And the music of Carly Dow and Del Barber

Carly Dow writes songs that draw you in. Her weapons of choice are an acoustic guitar and harmonica, backed up with insightful lyrics, and a unique, smoky voice.  She has been fortunate enough to play four times at the Winnipeg Folk Festival with the Young Performer's Program, and a variety of other venues in her hometown.  Watch for her and other talented young musicians - Winnipeg offers the best local music scene around!

Born and raised on the Canadian plains, Del Barber has found a new home on stage, winning audiences across Canada and the United States with raw talent and ample doses of charm. Barber’s official debut, Where the City Ends, is an assured and cohesive collection of prairie-born folk songs that explore the tension between urban and rural life.

In the spirit of legends like Townes Van Zandt, Greg Brown and John Prine, Barber dreams new life into old forms with a cutting sense of humour, a hint of cynicism, and songs that span the gulf between the sacred and the profane. A thoughtful reflection on place and progress, Where the City Ends is the sound of someone who’s fearless, honest and just plain loves his craft. With one foot in the city and the other on the farm, Barber’s music blends the wise sounds of the folk tradition with the earnest meditations of a prairie troubadour.
