Storytelling, music, art installation, hands on. Heartbreak and longing through music, art and handicrafts.

This Digital Detox show is the first in a series. Let’s leave our devices behind and be deeply present together.

From Daniela Fernandez, the artist: “Ay, Corazon” translates as “ay, my heart!” It is an expression of pain for unrequited love. However, it is also a magical realist vision of romance and what hides within it. It is a collection of textile pieces and sculptures handcrafted by an artist grappling with what love has meant to me. The pieces commemorate the ephemeral beauty of the dreams we build when we fall for someone; they also touch on the toxic way romantic love is often understood. This show is very much rooted in Latin America with its art, aesthetics and homage to the tradition of the overwrought melodramatic love story.

As a trilingual person, my experience of love has been filtered through media in English Spanish and French. This meant that the playlist that inspired the work also spans different languages. I’ve also spent a lot of time chasing love in venues like this one, late night cafes, bars and arts venues like the WECC. The concept behind the show is to take singers who speak each of the languages and have them pick two songs from my list to interpret, but then let them tell their own musical stories about love to share with the audience. Arielle Beaupré, Gabriela Ocejo and Flora Luna were chosen for their ability to truly capture rare depths of emotion in a way that breaks past the superficial. It was also an important way for me to bring together my linguistic communities meaningfully.

Presented in the low lights of the WECC, the glitter of the pieces contributes to an atmosphere where you will be immersed in a world of bright colours and vivid emotions, but also be safe in the warm community of the venue and the people around you. Make a craft, listen to a song, drink a hot chocolate, and know that where you are there is so much love.
